Chapter 1. Trade-offs in Data Systems Architecture

The chapter compares several contrasting concepts and explores their trade-offs. Following topics are considered:

• The difference between Operational Data Systems (OLTP) and Analytical data systems (OLAP)
• The pros and cons of Self-hosted Systems and Cloud Deployed Systems
• When to move from Single-Node Systems to Distributed Systems
• Balancing the needs of the business and the rights of the user
